Also in 2009, model, fashion designer and singer Victoria Beckham (of Spice Girls fame) bought her soccer-star husband, David Beckham, not one teacup piggy but two teacup piggies as a Christmas gift. In 2012, child reality TV star Alana Thompson (better known as Honey Boo Boo) briefly had a baby mini pig named Glitzy that she intended to take with her to beauty pageants as a good-luck charm. And singer Miley Cyrus posed with her pet teacup pig for the cover of a magazine in 2015.

#1: size. Many people jump blindly into the world of pet pigs, and buy into the myth of teacup pigs. Additionally, many new pig parents do not understand the definition of mini, and do not realize that even a 250lb pig is mini compared to many other breeds. Many pet pigs are abandoned by the time they are 1-2 years old solely due to size.

Also known as Micro pigs, the animals got their name because when born, they weigh only 9lbs and are as tiny as teacups! Though they do grow bigger, even at full-size they get to only between 14-16 inches in height and 65lbs in weight, still tiny relative to normal-sized pigs.

Teacup pigs, micro pigs, pocket pigs, royal dandys, julianas - no matter the name, the pitch is always the same: Adorable pigs that grow up to be no bigger than a small dog. Breeders have been selling "micropigs" since the 1980s, and to hear them tell it, you cannot find a better pet. Smarter than dogs, cleaner than cats, they can be potty-trained, learn tricks and go "wee wee wee" all the way to your home. Unfortunately, teacup pigs are a big, fat lie.

Make no mistake, your teacup pig will be intelligent. A recent white paper from Farm Sanctuary and based on a 2015 study published in the International Journal of Comparative Psychology found that pigs have excellent long-term memories, are aces at solving mazes, have a sense of time (being able to anticipate future events), learn from humans and other animals and exhibit emotional empathy. They can most certainly be potty-trained, just like a cat, and if kept in ideal climatic conditions, they can also be very clean.

The last option when it comes to adopting a mini pig is pure deception. Those who market and sell teacup pigs will often do so by selling the piglets and telling you that they are adults. They might even show you the parent pigs, which will also be relatively small.

Potbellied pigs are among the smallest pigs that you will find on a farm. However, they will still weigh 100 to 200 pounds, even if other pig breeds commonly weigh in at 1,000 or more. That is still a far cry from the tiny pig that you might expect to fit into a teacup for years to come.

A micro pig is a term for a type of pig originally born in England that weigh up to 40kg when fully grown. In some regions, they're referred to as teacup pigs. A mipig is even smaller, growing up to only 20kg in weight as an adult.

There is no such breed as a "teacup," "micro" or "miniature" pig. It simply does not exist. (All domesticated pigs, both those farmed for food and those kept as pets, are the same subspecies, Sus scrofa domesticus.) Breeders may use terms like these to describe the size of a pig, but adopting a "teacup" or "dandie" pig doesn't guarantee your pet will remain small. Many factors determine a pig's adult size, and two pigs who are the same size at birth may attain radically different sizes as they grow. 041b061a72
