Frankly, I never thought that there was anything unusual about it. But it turned out that they have their own logic: the format, the distribution of codes, even the order of the digits matter. For example, you can immediately understand what region they are calling from or that it is a mobile operator number. I liked that the article was written simply and clearly - now I can definitely explain to my friends how Japanese numbers differ from ours.
